How stretching improves sports performance

Studies worldwide showed that stretching before exercises slows down muscle response and affects performance and strength.

The conclusion does not touch on its excellent sides. A proper stretching protocol improves flexibility, range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, reduces injuries, lets us perform more confidently during exercise, and exert top performance effortlessly.

Providing more space for muscles and joints

The ROM of joints, torque naturally increases, and the visco-elastic behavior of muscle and tendon decreases after proper stretching. The fact is that improved ROM of the joints has new fantastic movement, which implies a unique space of joints for strength training; overall performance improves with the change of the quality and quantity of motion.

Reducing Injuries

To a certain extent, exercise without fear of injuries promote more energy and fun. Stretching helps muscle resistance reduces, which prevents some muscle strain injuries. Proper stretching also improves elasticity, tension, prevents muscle stiffness and better posture, giving more confidence to perform mentally.

Types of Stretching

Stretching divides into static, dynamic, and ballistic. Dynamic warm-up promotes blood circulation, improves muscle contractility, releases more ATP, and exerts muscle strength. Static one increases the range of joint motion, prevents muscle injuries, etc. Meanwhile, if someone only focusing on static stretching to improve performance, the muscles may reduce their strength and speed, which is hardly helpful for some explosive exercises. Therefore, these two types are equally important.

Wellness Concept’ tips

l Consider stretching types according to what kinds of sport you do.

l Specific training methods and stretching methods should also be adjusted according to various sports.

l Design and regular stretching training exert more remarkable performance in technical sports, such as basketball, skiing.

To conclude…

Stretching does improve flexibility, muscle torque, and muscle contraction ability to enhance training performance. A proper method and order of stretching training are the key to exert athletic performance. Whether it is leisure or competitive sports, overall sports performance be improved by systematic flexibility protocols.
